The concept of Social Ecological Restoration

Figure 1Some ideas may take a few discussions , some readings, and are probably completely developed in a couple of months. Others, may take years, or even decades to be fully developed in someone’s mind. The paper we just published in Restoration Ecology pertains to this second type. In this article we develop a concept proposed by Takeuchi and collaborators from 2014 in which they analyzed the need to reconstruct both a society and their supporting ecosystems in the aftermath of a catastrophe. We elaborated on this idea and extended it to include people that have been struggling for long time to have a decent quality of life and for which functional ecosystems represent a cultural value that can be as important, or more important than any revenue they can get from them. In fact, it is a vision of ecological restoration seen also as a healing process for human populations.
